According to the event announcement posted on BCHP’s website:
The Mosuo are one of China’s less known but very unique minority cultures. They are best known for the fact that they are one of the few remaining matriarchal cultures left in the world and have no system of marriage within their culture. Within the Mosuo culture, women are the head of the family and own all property and men and women alike are free to choose and change partners as they please.

This fascinating culture also faces many internal and external challenges, including poverty, disease, limited education, and pressures from the outside world that are threatening their traditional culture. John Lombard is the founder and co-director of the Lugu Lake Mosuo Cultural Development Association and has been working closely with the Mosuo for several years on projects to preserve their culture, promote awareness, and to address some of the challenges facing the Mosuo today.
